Word from the President

My name is Peter Rubben. I'm proud to say I have been a Power Engineer for more than 30 years. I have a member of IPE for 10 years and have been President for the past 3 years. My involvement in IPE has provided me with the opportunity to meet many Power Engineers throughout the country and this has allowed me to learn a lot and to develop a network. I am hoping that the new website will help me and all of you build on our existing relationships and connect better with each other and new members.

The new website will include news on things of interest to Power Engineers in British Columbia. We will make you aware of new legislation affecting Power Engineers. The website support your professional development by making you aware of education opportunities. We will also continue to make you aware of employment opportunities.
We hope you enjoy the new website and look forward to hearing from you.

Professionalism Committee

The Professionalism Committee was created by the Vancouver Branch of the IPE in September of 2008. Its’ main purpose was to look at ways to improve the industry image of power engineers, making our profession more recognizable to the average person.

Since its’ inception, the committee has developed a working plan to increase IPE membership by providing relevant services to power engineers.

For more information or to get involved, please contact Art Smith at asmith24@shaw.ca

Under the direction of David Babbich, the committee has started to develop a continued learning program which will strive to deliver new and exciting courses for power engineers. As well, the committee has also engaged the help of Neil Hughes to create our new website, a tool which is expected to broaden our ability to communicate with power engineers province wide.

Student Committee

The Student Committee has been meeting at BCIT in room 2024.

Student members of the IPE have nominated Farshad Foroughi to be their student representative, a position that was inducted by the Vancouver branch of the IPE during the general meeting held on November 24th, 2009.

So far the topics of discussion have been employment and educational opportunities, and tours.

Please refer to the calendar of events for meeting dates and times.

Student Committee Report

IPE Meeting for May 25, 2010

Dear members,

At the last meeting, I mentioned that many of the technical program power engineering students had taken and passed their part-A government exams. Additionally, most of the general program students have now taken and passed the part-A exam as well. Since the first year of the program is now coming to an end, most of the students are now prepping for final exams (May 25-31), and to write part-B of the government exams on the scheduled dates of June 11th or June 18th.

Most of the technical program students applied for job postings through BCIT’s co-op website. I believe that about 16 technical students (out of ~30 students) have received co-op position offers to a variety of companies, including Suncor, Teck Cominco, Tembec, etc. All students seem very excited to have the opportunity to gain some working experience as well as the additional firing time.

There are some students from the technical program who did not register to come back to BCIT for the following year; therefore, they were not allowed to use the BCIT co-op website in order to search for a summer-time position. Additionally, the general program students were also not granted access to the co-op site. There are also still a number of returning technical students still hoping to find summer-time firing experience. I have mentioned the job-postings on the IPE website, but if anyone has any suggestions of where to apply or search, I’m sure that it would be greatly appreciated by these students.

On another note, over the past couple of months, the students have been able to go on a multitude of plant tours. Some tours included Lions Gate Hospital, Roger’s Sugar, and Burrard Thermal. We all greatly enjoyed the experience, as well as being able to learn more about the different plant set-ups. We hope that more tours may continue to be scheduled for the next year, as well as to continue the tours for the new power engineering students who will be entering the program.

Farshad Foroughi
IPE Student Committee Representative
